Xbox decided to bring several of its exclusive games to Sony and Nintendo consoles. Thanks to this, PlayStation 5 players will soon be able to enjoy the adventures of Sea of Thieves, the popular pirate game by Rare.

Joe Neate and Mike Chapman —producer and director of the game, respectively— recently revealed that Sony was a major supporter in making the port a reality. They assured that they worked closely together and that the experience was somewhat surreal, as they did not think of coming to a platform like PlayStation 5.

During a recent interview with The Guardian, Neate and Chapman recounted part of their experience developing a version of Sea or Thieves for a platform other than Xbox. They said they experienced a surreal moment when they sat down with a team from Sony Interactive Entertainment one day to show them everything the title had to offer.

"We were educating them about the game, talking through what was special about it. It was so surreal. Trying to find treasure on an island with a group from a different platform holder,” the Rare creatives stated.

Neate and Chapman highlighted the support they received from Sony to make the PlayStation port a reality. The creatives stated that they worked with co-developers who had experience in that ecosystem. In addition, Sony was in constant contact with Rare through a team of technical staff, who took care of any questions about the development and PlayStation 5. Neate and Chapman said that this release is important, as it will be the first Rare game to come to Sony's ecosystem.

“This is the first time in Rare’s 40-year history that we’re developing on a Sony platform, which is incredible. It was quite surreal for us, getting on a call and being presented with a set of slides about a platform that we never thought we would get an opportunity to go ship on.

"But honestly, for our tech team, it was like: ‘Let’s just get kits in and start experimenting and figuring this out.’ We had them hidden away in a secret part of the studio with frosted windows and no one could peek in. It was excitement as much as anything else,” added the developers.
