Sony adjusted its sales forecast after falling short of its target

This morning, Sony revealed that PlayStation 5 already sold 54.8 million units worldwide. This means that the console shipped 8.2 million units during the last quarter that ended last December 31.

Although these are excellent figures, it's not all good news. The console has not met Sony's sales expectations for the current fiscal year, so the company decided to lower its expectations. Shortly after, it confirmed that PlayStation 5 has already entered the last phase of its life cycle.

According to the information, Naomi Matsuoka, senior vice president at Sony, expects PlayStation 5 sales to slow down and start to fall starting next fiscal year. According to forecasts, this downward trend would start in April this year.

Originally, Sony wanted to sell 25 million units of PlayStation in the current fiscal year. However, due to the most recent results, the Japanese company decided to lower its target to 21 million units worldwide.

"Looking ahead, PS5 will enter the latter stage of its life cycle. As such, we will put more emphasis on the balance between profitability and sales. For this reason, we expect the annual sales pace of PS5 hardware will start falling from the next fiscal year," the executive stated

For now, there was no clear talk about the future of the brand. Rumors claim that Sony is preparing the launch of a possible PlayStation 5 Pro and that it is already working on the technology for PlayStation 6. However, it has not confirmed a more powerful revision of its current console for now. We will have to wait for the company to reveal details about what it is preparing for its gamers.
