Sony does not want to be left behind in this section, so it is already working on an alternative to leave behind usernames and passwords.
While this is good news as it will strengthen the security of PlayStation Network and its entire ecosystem, some people are not entirely enthusiastic. The reason? Clues point to the company betting on passwords involving biometric data.
Sony would protect PlayStation accounts with biometric data
To access your PlayStation Network account you currently require an email and password. While there are additional security measures, such as 2-step verification, it is a fact that no one is completely secure.
For this reason, Sony is looking for new alternatives such as passwords. It recently posted information about this on its site. This despite the fact that it has not made an official announcement on the matter. If the use of passwords is confirmed, players could protect their accounts using biometric data.
This means they could log in with their fingerprint or facial recognition. This would gradually leave the password system behind, in pursuit of enhanced security and a more accessible experience for users.
However, some people are concerned about this possible change, as they know that the handling of biometric data can be very sensitive. It carries risks that also jeopardize users' privacy, security and identity, as the information can end up in the wrong hands in the event of a cyberattack.
As we mentioned, Sony has not yet confirmed when it will release this new feature. What is striking is that on its site it already has an option to activate it. So, it is expected to happen soon.
