Is Shigeru Miyamoto already thinking about retirement? The Nintendo creative comes clean and reveals it

Shigeru Miyamoto is, without a doubt, one of the industry's greatest legends. The outstanding Nintendo creative has had a decades-long career, in which he has achieved great accomplishments and delighted us with fun projects.

Despite the passing years, Miyamoto is still more than active, so many wonder if he will ever retire. The 71-year-old creative decided to break the silence and, during a recent interview, answered the important question.

During a chat with The Guardian, Miyamoto was asked about his possible retirement in the next few years. As you probably already know, the creative is currently working on expanding his franchises to other media, such as movies and amusement parks.

Thus, the creative has not stopped working on what he loves so much for decades. Miyamoto was clear and confessed that he is not thinking about retirement as such, as he wants to remain active as long as possible. The creative is aware of his age, so he is already thinking of a plan in case something happens to him in the coming years.

On the other hand, he was very happy with everything he has achieved in his career. He pointed out that he does not feel he owns the things he has built, as they have grown away from him with the help of many other people to whom he is grateful.

“More so than retiring, I’m thinking about the day I fall over. In this day and age you have to think about things in a five-year timespan, so I do think about who I can pass things on to, in case something does happen. I’m really thankful that there is so much energy around things that I have worked on.

"These are things that have already gone out into the world… they’ve been cultivated by others, other people have been raising them, helping them grow, so in that sense I don’t feel too much ownership over them any more,” Miyamoto explained.

Previously, the creative also stated that he was not thinking of a retirement as such. He also added that Nintendo probably won't change much when he's gone. All that said, we still have Miyamoto for a while.
