The new year has just begun, but the possible completion of the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by the end of 2023 already faces its first hurdle. Indeed, the leadership of the CMA (Competitions and Markets Authority), the British institution responsible for anti-trust controls, has announced a new delay in the progress of the process.

When will they announce the results?

The UK body, in particular, confirmed that its final report on the Activision Blizzard acquisition would not be released by March 1, 2023, as originally announced. Instead, the new deadline for the document release is now set for April 26, 2023.

The possible publication of some preliminary comments will dilute the delay announced by the CMA. These could also be accompanied by possible suggestions for maneuvers to mitigate the effects of the acquisition on the video game market. Such statements are expected to be shared by the UK Competitions and Markets Authority between late January and early February 2023.

In the meantime, the dispute pitting the top management of Microsoft and the FTC against each other continues, with the latter still extremely skeptical about the possible effects on competition of a takeover of Activision Blizzard by the Redmond giant. At this point, all that remains to be done is to await the next developments in the complex affair.
