Oh no! PlayStation VR 2 will not support the first PSVR games

Sony confirmed the bad news today

While PlayStation VR 2 is getting closer to its 2023 launch date the ambitious and promising virtual reality helmet has bad news for you. Sadly, if you were waiting for its launch to replay all your PlayStation VR games, that will not be possible as there will be no backward compatibility in this virtual reality headset.

During the latest official PlayStation podcast episode: 439, Virtual Impressions, the vice president of platform experience Hideaki Nishino confirmed it. He made clear that games for the first PlayStation VR will not be compatible with Sony's new virtual reality helmet explaining that this is caused because PS VR2 is designed to offer a next-generation experience. Therefore, the game design for PS VR2 is completely different from that of PSVR.

The whole explanation is around the 29-minute mark in the podcast that you can listen to it here.

“PSVR2 has much more advanced features like [an] all-new controller with haptic feedback, and adaptive triggers as I said, inside-out tracking, eye tracking, [the] 3D audio is coming together, and HDR, of course. So this means that developing games for PSVR2 requires a whole different approach than PSVR.”

There is still a way to play PS VR games…

Not everything as bad news, as you know, PlayStation VR games can run on PlayStation 5. So, yes, you can play them on the next-gen console and you can continue to do so as long as you use the first PlayStation VR headset. On the other hand, if you only have the new PS VR2, you will be limited to next-gen games.

What do you think about Sony’s move? Were you planning to play games from the first PlayStation VR on PlayStation VR2? Share your opinions in the comments below.
