A couple of days ago a script allegedly used to cast the next Tomb Raider game’s actors, was leaked and featured in an episode of the Sacred Symbols podcast.
We got a lot of interesting details for the upcoming Tomb Raider game or ‘Project Jawbreaker’ as it is internally known. Described as “an action-adventure game set in a modern-day world rocked by a mysterious cataclysm”.
With a storyline which will show a mature Lara Croft, successful but isolated and on the verge of retirement, while she leads a new generation of tomb riders. At the time, it was warned that these details should be taken with reserve because, in the end, they were nothing more than a rumour. However, with this response Square Enix has just confirmed it.
Not happy at all
Well, Square Enix is not happy with you knowing these details, and according to Sacred Symbols podcast host Colin Moriarty, he was contacted by Patreon and asked to remove the “offending material”, or else, his program will be suspended from the platform.
Through a video describing everything that went down in just a couple of days, Moriarty shared that the DMCA came via Square Enix. “They DMCA’d Patreon, to have them ask us to take down the offending audio of us talking about the new Tomb Raider game.”
“I was acting in the notion that this is fair use, this is general interest, this is of huge general interest, I didn’t break into Crystal Dynamics to steal it.”
They will not take it down
Fair Use is a tricky concept as it varies depending on the context, in this particular case we need to remember that the script in question was part of a “secret” project which explains Square Enix response.
“We are not going to take all of it down unless we are forced to do that,” Moriarty noted, referring to the edited version of the podcast on Patreon and the original versions available on Apple Podcasts and YouTube.
